The Blood Sugar Solution, by Dr. Mark Hyman

There is an epidemic of obesity and diabetes in this country (U.S.A.).  I just read that 1 in 4 kids between the ages of 12 – 19 are either diabetic or pre-diabetic.  This is horrible!  Why?  Because Type 2 Diabetes is 100% diet related.  How did sugar replace real, live, healthy food?  Muffins for breakfast, white bread sandwiches for lunch, and pasta for dinner do not count as real food.  Yet, that is what a larg part of society is eating on a daily basis.

I am so thankful for books like, “The Blood Sugar Solution”, by, Dr. Mark Hyman.  Dr. Hyman is a medical doctor that has been trained in function, intergrative, and nutritional medicine.  What that means is he tries to figure out the reason for his patients’ symptoms and doesn’t just prescribe medication to cover up the symptoms.  In his book, Dr. Hyman states that there are five causes of disease: Poor Diet, Chronic Stress, Microbes, Toxins, and Allergens.  Fixing these five causes will bring your health into balance.  Dr. Hyman has also coined the term, “Diabesity” (the combining of diabetes and obesity) because over 70% of overweight people have blood sugar issues.

My main topic of this post isn’t about Dr. Hyman, but it is about two patients of mine that saw him on his recent PBS special and got a copy of his book.  Just with that information they are already changing their lives.

My staff and I have been on “Cloud Nine” for the past month and this is why; we have a husband and wife who have been coming to the office for some time.  They both have had major body issues from severe injuries that left them “broken”.  They have been limited in their ability to exercise so they both ended up gaining weight from their inactivity.  The husband is diabetic and the wife’s blood sugar levels were increasing.  She also had high C-Reactive Protein (inflammation marker) on her last lab test.

We talked diet over the years and they tried to incorporate more vegetables.  I knew the wife drank pop (soda) but I never ask how many.  For some reason I thought one per day.  What I found out was that she was drinking 6 per day.  She said that changed from Pepsi to Ginger Ale as she thought it was healthier.  I was blown away.  I have used this as a huge lesson to never presume anything again.

When her blood tests came back with high CRP and high sugars I was getting concerned for the state of their health.  I knew they ate lots of bread and pasta so I gave them several books to read about the no grain diet (“Dangerous Grains”, by, James Braly and “The No Grain Diet”, by, Joseph Mercola, M.D.).

The following week they came into my office so excited.  They had started reading the book I had shared with them but they also wanted to me to know about, “The Blood Sugar Solution”, by, Dr. Mark Hyman.  They saw him on PBS and hung on his every word.  The wife told me that she had immediately stopped drinking pop and that they had also changed their eating…all in ONE WEEK.

Since their “epiphany” they have both lost over 25 pounds.  You can see the pounds melting off of their bodies.  On their most recent visit to see me you could see a sparkle in their eyes that hadn’t been there before.  They are really starting to get their lives back.

They are logging onto Dr. Hyman’s website and they have purchased his cookbook.  They have “followed” him through the grocery store.  They have read his blog, watched his videos, and they have diligently studied his information and research.  They are on a path of health and wellness and I know that nothing will get in their way.  I am extremely excited for them and their new phase of life.

I have been amazed sometimes at how simple changes in diet can have such a huge impact on health. Controlling blood sugar is as important, if not more so, than controlling cholesterol, for overall health.

Thank you so much for sharing this story. The more stories like this we hear the more it will settle into our minds that we have to be realistic with food and it’s consequences. I’m looking forward to checking that book out. I can tell I’m addicted to sugar. My inner dialogue between the part of me that wants to eat healthy and the part of me that wants to eat dessert all the time is starting to make me uncomfortable. At least I notice it now. Have I moved out of the denial phase yet?
